Sinister (2012) Movie Review

First Impression

Not always into a scary movie, but it tis’ the season for them and this one seemed to have more plot and substance than most.  Not to mention with Ethan Hawke you can’t go wrong right? Sinister is a mystery horror movie about a true crime novelist investigating a murder and missing child, that turns into a series of murders with missing children. Featuring strong internal struggles as well as family conflicts as the main character Ellison Oswalt(Ethan Hawke) tries to reignite his career. I don’t want to give too much of the film away, but it also includes some demonic rituals and bone chilling darkness, only leaving you to wonder where the light switch was. Unlike many horror films however Sinister had a very distinct tie up that left no loose ends.

Plot and Substance

My first thoughts, despite the questionable logic of turning the lights, were mostly correct. This wasn’t just a horror or scary movie but also a film with more of a mystery plot that leads you to wonder what is next. I always get engaged in a good mystery, the foreshadowing and well placed clues make for a very interesting plot that has a little more substance. Discouraged a little by the repetitive nature of suspense it is also habit forming that was continuously shocked by something bigger.

Seasonal Entertainment

Earlier I mentioned it was the season for a good scary movie, get the adrenaline flowing and the hair on the back of your neck up. Sinister will succeed at fulfilling this need and desire of the Halloween season. I do look foreword to the other movies that will provide the same if not better feeling this season.

Verdict

Sinister was entertaining and succeeded in creating shock and scare with plot substance . If you are looking for a mystery movie that will scary you along the way, it is well worth money. However, if you are looking for a movie you really get something out of, please just wait for this one on Netflix, with a dark night of popcorn. I’m going to score Sinister at a 7.2, though it is worth seeing if you are into a scary movie, I am eager to see what upcoming scary movies have to offer.
