Cruel Intentions: Appreciating Reese

First Thoughts

So admittedly only reccently have I seen the movie Cruel Intentions. I know, I know the 1999 teen movie what was I thinking on movie choice that night, But I actually rather enjoyed this movie. This was honestly one of the better teenage movies to come out of the 90’s. From all the teen movies I have seen this might be the most vulgar and dark, but also one of the better ones. Above all else this movie really had something more that I had never really appreciated until now, Reese Witherspoon.

Eye Opening Reese

Now, Reese I’m sorry but I really wasn’t much of a fan until I saw this movie. I can really see where she captured Hollywood as their sweetheart, she really left the audience with a distinct attitude and impression that made you really love her character. The challenging and confident Annette Hargrove comes into this movie as a target for Ryan Phillippe’s character and captures the audience and Sebastian coming out as the hero. I was extremely impressed and now have a reason to go see more Reese Witherspoon films.

American Drama

Cruel Intentions is a dark and sexually forward film, not graphic by any means, very tactful in that respect but certainly forward. The film’s story holds most of the value as it progresses through the step brother and sister’s socially dark revenge plots. While they battle their own struggles and manipulate those around them, they are also directly in conflict over a bet of who will accomplish their revenge plot first. The conflicting love story and unyielding pride of the two manipulative step brother(Ryan Phillippe) and sister(Sarah Michelle Gellar) drive the film along. The of the movie really brings it all together in the end with the slow progressing plot of sex, drugs and drinking. Overall a fairly entertaining movie where you are really wondering what will happen next.

Rating?

Though this is my first movie review I like to judge movies on a very clear scale the first factor being would I watch it again? Yes, it was a great movie that you can really get into the story that is being presented. In saying that I didn’t fall asleep and I left the movie with and emotional attachment to Reese Witherspoon’s character Annette. Clearly deserving of some recognition as many movies you really don’t leave with any feeling. I’m going to rate Cruel Intentions a 7.8 out of 10. For being a teen movie, with some bad acting,  I really got something out of the movie(Reese is Awesome) and it was quite an entertaining experience. This would really put me in the 79% according to rotten Tomatoes that liked the film, even the greats fall.
